A typical picture of participants relaxing around a campfire after taking part in a rogaine - the marquee in the background is the catering tent, where cheerful volunteers prepare the most amazing food and serve it up to people as they finish the event.
Rogaining is a team sport - and the team can be friends, family, fellow scouts. It's also terrific value for money - you get membership, entry to the event, a full day's entertainment, support from the organisers and coaches and amazing food - all for one reasonably low entry fee.
In general, events start from an area with water and toilets - and camping is usually permitted. A 6 hour Sunday rogaine is a perfect opportnity for Scouts or Venturers - come up Saturday, participate in coaching, camp overnight and compete on Sunday.
Nillumbik Emus Orienteering Club is one of the larger orienteering clubs in metropolitan Melbourne - while the club is primarily a "bush club" its members are active in all types of navigation sports - including rogaining, bush orienteering, park and street orienteering, mountain bike orienteering and night orienteering.
The club has 6-8 qualified coaches - all of whom are very experienced bush orienteers. In Melbourne, Nillumbik Emus lead the way - in quality of events run, in supporting community groups such as Scouts and Guides, in creating new maps for us to run on and for outstanding technology compared to other clubs in Melbourne.
Nillumbik Emus do not tout for new members; if you'd like to be part of one of the leading orienteering clubs in Melbourne, just chat to any NE member at your next event and they'll put you in touch with Schon - our membership secretary.
